THE FACTS
Community services in Peel region have reached a breaking point.
Skyrocketing population growth in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon has completely outpaced the funding that lets our support systems help people in need.
The result is stark.
Food programs and meal centres are wiping their cupboards bare, as they try to feed more and more people all the time.
Shelters can’t keep youth for long enough to get back on their feet, resulting in way too many being lost, stuck in the system, and overdosing on the streets.
Violence against women counsellors often need to put clients on a waitlist before they can offer help. This, in a region that has the highest reported incidents of choking in the province.
Homecare clients are stuck on endless waiting lists that rarely move, as their circumstances get more and more acute.
The need for funding could not be greater.
The region is the most diverse and fastest growing in Ontario. It is home to over 200 languages and culturally appropriate services. The region increases the size of Barrie every census.
But as Peel is growing, funding does not. For every dollar that other major cities like Toronto and Ottawa get for community services, Peel gets less than 50 cents.
A recent study by Blueprint showed definitively - Peel gets less.
Provincial funding for services in Peel region is $578 less per person. That’s $868 million less across the Region.
You pay the same taxes everyone else pays. Why don’t you get the same services?
